The role of women through the years

The role of women has been greatly understimated in the last few decades. Throughout history in some past societies women were seen as wives who were intended to cook, clean and take care of their children. Other times male writers portrayed them as inferior to them.

Across Europe, women could not vote, were discouraged from owning a business. Young aristocratic women were forced to marry men and all their property was transferred to their husband. Women who broke the rules were punished or exiled.

After the First World War with the development of industry, the role of women changed. Women’s groups for example “Suffragettes” campaigned for women to be granted the right to vote.

During the Roaring Twenties women have made such gains in equality. They had more freedom and emancipation; they drank, drove cars. The two World Wars showed that women were able to work outside the home and that they could crontribute to the economy. The role of women in public life has encouraged greater reliability in institutions. They work shoulder to shoulder with men in all the areas.

Women enjoy a better level of equality today in Western-societies (many of them are financially independent), but in many parts of the World women do not enjoy equal opportunities to earn, participate in politics or get education. They are struggling against violence and discrimination. In the Middle East, until last year women weren’t allowed to drive. Saudi Arabian women were allowed into a football stadium to watch a match for the first time on January 2018. However, today they can only sit in ‘the family section’ and cannot mix freely with male.

The role of women in modern society is constantly evolving. They are aware of their worth in the family, in the society and in the world. Women continuously work hard to get equality, so they should be free to choose the career or lifestyle they prefer without being discriminated.
